Hmm I don't think I'm a fan, but I'm happy the gig posters have sprouted back up.

bridget_landon Best birthday present ever! Thank you @flightoftheconchords for putting on an amazing show and taking the time to meet your fans! Their managers were trying to get them to leave but Jemaine said, "but that's not fair, look at all these people who are waiting!" Such wonderful people!

Great pictures Laura! #loveeyes# I love that the guys are still willing to go out and meet fans after all these years. It's something they really don't have to do.. I hope they know how much it means to us. Which I'm sure they do or they probably wouldn't do it right. #love3#

So sorry about that! The board is set to automatically log off after 10 minutes of inactivity. If your post took longer than 10 minutes to write up it probably logged you out because it thought you were gone. If you click on 'Login' at the top right of the board, it will take you to another page with login options. There you can set the board to remember you. This way, you won't really ever have to log in again and this won't happen to you again.

I really hope you aren't discouraged from re-writing your experience. We'd still really love to read it! :)

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS BRING UNSCRIPTED COMEDY & MUSICAL RANGE TO DETROIT’S FOX THEATRE (SHOW REVIEW)
June 20, 2016 by Marko Polovina

You wouldn’t know it from their appearance, but Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are all about the rock and roll lifestyle. At least they professed that during their Flight of the Conchords performance on June 16th at the historic Detroit Fox Theatre. They are also chronicling their behind the music in a book of their very own rock and roll. A lot was said during their hilariously magical act in song, banter between audience members, or just inane boring details that frankly felt refreshingly unscripted and downright entertaining. Pleasantly surprising is that the two mix it up with equal measures of new comedic jabs and old favorites.

Spoiler: show
“Don’t think we don’t know how to party. We’re very rock ‘n roll,” said Bret during the opening scenes of the show, which by the responses of those in attendance was very much in anticipation. Explaining their routines of their first leg of this tour was highlighted by the simplicity of their odd instruments that Jemaine would eventually use in hilarious fashion in every other song – the vibraslap which felt impeccably placed by the chimes. To up their creditability the duo had to perform “Party,” in which they beautifully described chips and dip, party etiquette in social situations, and party fouls.

Other such magnanimous moments of new material from the New Zealand act was the involvement of New Zealand Orchestra, one man – Nigel Collins; the medieval wooing number of “The Summer of 1353,” and “Seagull,” where Bret distinctly speaks as if he were a seagull (according to Jemaine’s metaphorical interpretation in the song itself), highlighted by a seagull piano solo with cusp hands beating away at multiple key strikes.

What can be counted on during the Flight of the Conchords show is their range of musical takes – jazzy accentuated by black and white visuals, western country style of a pants-less American man full of rage and pretty much an asshole of free expression, or Jemaine working the streets of Detroit as a prostitute. They bring it all to the forefront of absurdity.

Where the duo thrived on Thursday evening was their definitive ease in improv. Their lyrical obviousness of not only physical gaffes on stage but observational comedy in the crowd. At times instinctually Bret or Jemaine would yell at the people in the aisles getting drinks or going to the bathroom– “where the fuck are you going this is our jazz song? Hold your urine and just piss in a bag.”

It was hitting on all cylinders for everyone there with each laugh harder than the last. Evidence to their ingenuity during equipment failures, Jemaine blamed his backstage posse (who were wearing invisibility cloaks) of the problems until one eventually came out to hand him a new piece of equipment. “Why aren’t you using your cloak, those invisibility cloaks are really expensive,” Bret smirkingly criticized.

Spoiler: show
The pre-determined encore, stated by the duo early in the show: “it’s where the band pretends they won’t be coming out for a few more tracks, but really they do – well, you’ll all see eventually” was comprised of classics such as “Business Time,” “Bowie in Space,” and a hilariously new song on gym sex buddies called “Fuck You On The Ceiling” ending the non-stop delight the two delivered all night.

Setlist:

Spoiler: show
Chips and Dips
Father and Son
Foux du Fafa
The Most Beautiful Girl (in the Room)
The Ballad of Stana
Mutha'uckas / Hurt Feelings
Carol Brown
Shady Rachel
The Seagull
1353 (Woo a Lady)
Bowie

Encore:
Fuck on the Ceiling
Business Time
You Don't Have to Be a Prostitute
Think About It

Ok, back again. :)

Glad you found that review...I won't have to type as much, lol. It will probably echo much of what has been written already but it was amazing! They are so much more obviously comfortable and everything flowed really nicely.

Spoiler: show
Eugene was really funny- I didn't expect to enjoy him...I wanted Jemaine and Bret!!...but he really made us laugh a lot. His last bit about possibly getting a network of his own, "like Oprah," called 'Eugene TV' just about killed me. He played promos of some of the shows. Kristen Schall was in one, and the one that about made me pee my pants was called 'Antiquers.' Deadpan humor kills me. I know it was just a comedy bit but I would watch all of those shows!

When he finished he intro'd the guys and it was ON! We gave them a loud and happy welcome. Jemaine asked if someone asked how we were doing just one-on-one is that how we respond? "WAOOOOOOOOO!" Lol.

They complimented our FOX Theater- said it was really beautiful and their favorite in the country. #love3#

Jemaine introduced the chimes "helpful for when we're reminiscing..." Bret says something like "Remember when we were last here..." *Jemaine strokes the chimes* #perfect
Then he shows us the vibraslap and pretends he doesn't know how to use it. But each time during the course of the show that he uses it- it adds that perfect something to the song, lol! (Don't ask me to remember which songs- I cannot.) I just enjoyed the hell outta that thing! I think he used it about 5 times.

Chips and Dips- the Party Song. I need to hear it more- it was very deadpan and silly and I love that. :)

Of course Nigel was introduced as the NZ Symphony Orchestra and they watched and marveled over how amazing it was to hear the orchestra tuning, as he tuned up his bass. :)

They fleshed out some of the newer songs like Stana and Father & Son- they were a bit longer but I thought better. They really got banter-y during Stana, lol, and it was hilarious! Afterwards they were asking people up front if they met someone who looked just like them, could they have a relationship with them? Could they have sex with someoe who looked exactly like them?? When he finally got a 'yes,' Jemaine said "Freak." #haha#

Foux Du Fafa was great- normal speed! #thumbsup# Jemaine thinking hard to come up with French phrases. Their accents are lovely. I never tire of this one. (Unlike BT. Be nice to get a little break.)

I see Mutha'uckas and Hurt Feelings being put down as a mashup. I disagree. They segued from MU to HF but they were both fully done. So 2 songs- not 1. :P

I was so thrilled when Jemaine picked up his Omnichord! I knew it would be Carol Brown. But-oops! It wasn't working! Matt brought him out another one- that's when he used the invisibility cloak banter, and Jemaine said something like "well, nice...except that I know how to play the other one. Not this one. I guess I can learn it as I go..." Bret and Nigel as the choir of ex-gfs sounded lovely, as did Jemaine.

Shady Rachel. I need to hear it more and see if it'll grow on me. But yes, their comments as people got up to go to the bathroom were funnier than the song!

The Seagull song. I couldn't love it more. It's beautiful. Only FOTC could write and perform a song that starts out so angsty and end it with you laughing your ass off. Bret was on piano and he was on. point. His voice and playing were beautiful! Jemaine, his straight-man...well....you'll see. :) Now I wish I'd gotten the seagull tshirt.

When they were getting ready for 1353, they asked that the lights be made 'more medieval.' So it went dark for a few beats, lol. Then Jemaine had us all look up at the beautiful globe high up in the Fox's ceiling, how beautiful and how nice the light was from it. But that it really wasn't medieval...could someone please come and put some candles up there instead, lol?

At the end of Summer of 1353, Nigel, Jemaine, and Bret each had recorders and they started one-upping each other and then that turned into a recorder-off where Jemaine got up and danced around, then Bret followed suit, Bret reached over and was helping Jemaine play his, lol, then Bret did a rock-n-roll recorder move and played his with his back to us and bending back his head back. It was awkward and hilarious. Very rock-n-roll! (Not.) But quite homoerotic! #evilgrin#

Bowie was just lovely. The lighting and smoke and their perfect voices....I was kind of wondering if they'd change/add a lyric but they kept it as is. And it was great.

I'd much rather have heard Bus Driver's Song or Jenny than Business Time but...maybe next time.

They added a bit of "Roxanne" to YDHTBAProstitute. Bret started singing 'Juh-maaaaaaaaine' and J may have said something about red lights...I'm not sure. We were all laughing and wooing and clapping. Bret said after that they'd done it in OH because Sting had been in the audience.

Show ends, happiness overload is happening in my brain, and we decide to go ahead and head over to the same spot we had our meet n greet 7 years ago. Some WTF friends were there and we all waited. After only about 45 minutes or so- Bret came out! They opened the gate and set up 1 small barricade and we were off. :) He was so sweet. I was wearing the tour shirt from back then and he'd signed the back, Jemaine the front. He got a kick out of seeing it. I didn't ask him to sign anything- I think I had them sign about 4 things last time! I just thanked him for coming back...reminded him that they told us they'd be back in 2009. After our pic, he said "see you 2023," lol! I told him I hoped it wouldn't be that long. :) He signed Tom's shirt, right over where Jemaine had signed it last time but since it had been washed a lot, you could barely see his sig. Covered by Bret's now, lol. While he was finishing up with a friend, they were talking about last time and Sugalumps. I told him we'd been left side front row and he'd posed for a pic but it came out blurry. He asked 'was it like this?' and he got in the legs-spread, thrust position. "Yep!" Wish I'd had the camera ready.

We watched and helped with pics as everyone else got their turns and before the crowd had all seen Bret- out came Jemaine! :D This was the highlight of the entire night for me.

So the guard-dude had us line up on the opposite side for him. When it was my turn I started to go up to him and he looked at me and said "Laura." #thud# I probably looked like a deer in the headlights. "How..." and he said "I remimber you." *Faint* * Swoon* #heart# #love3# #loveeyes# Jemaine remembered me...and he knew my name!

One of my friends there posted this on FB: "Yes, I was a couple of people behind Laura in line, and Jemaine said, loudly and authoritatively,
"LAURA",
and it was so cool!!!" #jem# #heart#

He was just so sweet and laid-back- they both were. I told him- oh, I also told Bret the same- that they were fantastic, the show was great, yada, yada, lol. Pic snapped by a friend rather than with my old camera- It's why my Bret-pic is crap, lol. Ah well. Eugene was also there and we told him he was hilarious- he really was! Tom thanked them for coming out to meet with us, and I'm so glad because it's so true! We're so lucky.
I didn't get the poster because, well...I didn't care for it. I took a pic. I did get the grey "Flight of the Motherflippin Conchords" tee. I love it.
It was a great night. :D
Anyone who has the chance to see them still on this tour- do it!

Someone posted this setlist and I only just discovered that if you click the play arrow by the song- you can see them perform the Party Song- Chips and Dips. It's not from our show, but... :) The others all link to older vids- ever the other new songs. *edited because I see now this has already been posted.
http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/flight-of ... e73cb.html

And how cool are FOTC fans that when I look on YT for videos...that I'm finding none?! We love them and want to please them. (But I really want to hear/see Seagull again. And again. :D
