Business time at last for Canty fans
'Investigate the lyrics, you'll be rewarded'
Last updated 05:00 27/06/2012

Image

The wait finally came to an end for thousands of Christchurch fans of Flight of the Conchords last night.

In March, hundreds camped overnight outside the CBS Canterbury Arena to buy tickets for the popular duo.

Last night, at a packed CBS Canterbury Arena, it was finally Business Time.

The New Zealand folk-comedy duo of Oscar winner Bret McKenzie and Emmy nominee Jemaine Clement received a huge ovation in Christchurch.

At about 8.50pm, the duo, wearing boxes on their heads, came on stage, starting their set with Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor.

"If you really investigate the lyrics, you'll be richly rewarded," said Clement.

The Conchords were supported by United States comedian Arj Barker.

Fans counted down to the concert on Twitter last night.

"Listening to Flight of the Conchords at work and randomly cracking up laughing at my desk. Yaaaay #FOTC tonight!" tweeted Hayley Payne in Christchurch.

"Getting pumped for @arjbarker and @fotc in Christchurch tonight!" tweeted Michael Jeffcott.

"U aint alone, dawg," Arj Barker tweeted back to him.

The proceeds of the concert will go towards Cholmondeley Children's Home and the restoration of the Isaac Theatre Royal.

Flight of the Conchords are set to play in Nelson's Trafalgar Centre tonight.

REVIEW

Reviewed by Vicki Anderson

The basis of Flight of the Conchords' comedic schick is modesty: their successful HBO series revolved around their lack of success.

Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are now selling out arena shows around the world. Clement has an ascending Hollywood film career and McKenzie won an Oscar with Man or Muppet.

But the Conchords were as delightfully earnest and low-key as the last time I saw them in Christchurch.

Arj Barker served as the appetiser for this comedic smorgasboard.

Barker is a wizard of stand-up, using vocal changes with great emphasis, whether as a rallying pro pot cry or describing how "DTF" he is. He's a regular to our shores and his comedy style is engaging and clever.

But this sold-out show, fundraising for Cholmondeley Children's Home and repairs to the Isaac Theatre Royal, had more than 9000 Cantabrians eagerly awaiting business time, and the nation's fourth most popular comedy duo didn't disappoint.

Appearing in silver shirts Freddy Mercury probably would have thrown out, heads hidden by homemade cardboard robot helmets, they opened with Too Many Dicks (On the Dancefloor) Barker rapping along, before the low-fi sci-fi sarcasm of Robots.

The two-hour set that followed, without helmets, showcased both the Conchords' superb songwriting skills and the awkward lyrical romantic fumbles that we love them for. They were occasionally backed by a shaggy- haired bloke called Nigel on cello, apparently on loan from the "sympathy orchestra".

The pair's vocal range is madly impressive. Set highlights were Pet Shop Boys spoof Inner City Pressure, new song F . . . king on the Ceiling and Demon Woman, in which the trio stripped to bedazzled vests, skintight trou, wings and capes.

They even got medieval, wooing us with Madrigal The Summer of 1353 before wowing us with their sugar lumps.

Whether exposing the arrogance of pop posers lecturing on global issues or accurately channelling Bowie, their subversive attack on music's cliches didn't leave a dry seat in the house.
