Guild staff enjoyed entertaining Bret and Jemaine, plus helping Comic Relief

A buzz of excitement ran through the Pharmacy Guild last Friday (1 June) as the cast of Flight of the Conchords used the premises for filming.

Anyone who has seen the TV series Flight of the Conchords will have an idea of what Murray's office looks like. It's not the most modern space; some might say it's a little dated. So, when the Conchords crew needed a Wellington-based stand-in office for Murray, a real estate scout contacted the occupants of Pharmacy House.

Anyone who has visited Pharmacy House on Dixon Street in Wellington knows the building is a little tired.

The Pharmacy Guild occupies the premises, which is currently undergoing a revamp.

However, an office which has not yet been updated was available and the guild kindly offered the space for filming.

The filming was for a television show which will be screened on Red Nose Day, 24 August, in aid of the charity Cure Kids.

"The guild was so pleased we were able to do something for Comic Relief," executive assistant and office manager at the guild, Sally Walker-Simmons, who also helped organise the filming, says.

"Flight of the Conchords is world famous, so it was really exciting having them in the office," she adds.

While Murray (played by Rhys Darby) had to dash off soon after filming, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement hung around and took a photo with guild staff.

"They're really shy, humble guys," Ms Walker-Simmons says.

"Bret says he loves the guild!" she adds.

Conchords duo in charity comic gig

A star-studded marathon Comic Relief TV show is in the works featuring Flight of the Conchords and the All Blacks.

An announcement is due next week, but the Herald on Sunday understands the show will combine live action and pre-recorded scenes.

The news follows sightings in Wellington and Auckland of the Conchords filming scenes for a new show with Target host Brooke Howard-Smith.

Comic Relief was launched from a refugee camp in Sudan on Christmas Day in 1985, live on BBC One. At that time, a devastating famine was crippling Ethiopia.

The idea was to get a troupe of British comedians to make the public laugh while raising money to help people in desperate need.

It has since become a global movement and features regular star-studded charity events. Now, New Zealand has been added to the programme.

Howard-Smith is producing a marathon Comic Relief special for Friday, August 24. The 4-hour show would screen on TV3 and raise funds for KidsCan, the All Blacks' official charity partner.

Primary school kids in Auckland were thrilled by a surprise VIP visit from the hit comedy duo on Friday.

Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement dropped by Grey Lynn School and spent several hours with students, then filmed behind closed doors.

One mother, who didn't want to be named, said her 6-year-old daughter told her she had spent the day "helping the Flight of the Conchords write a song".

"The children were very excited at having such famous people come to meet them and they all had a great time," the mum added.

Staff at Grey Lynn School declined to say what the Conchords were filming there. But the top-secret appearance drew parallels with a surprise sighting in Wellington a fortnight ago.

"Flight of the Conchords arrived in town. They were filming something for Comic Relief. They needed to use an old-looking office," Wellington journalist Rhonwyn Newson told the Herald on Sunday.

The Conchords took over an office at the Pharmacy Guild as a substitute for the messy, old office Conchords' fans might associate with Rhys Darby's character Murray.

"The guild was so pleased we were able to do something for Comic Relief," office manager Sally Walker-Simmons told Pharmacy Today. "Flight of the Conchords is world famous, so it was really exciting having them in the office."

Famous Kiwis team up for Red Nose Day
Thursday, 28 June, 2012 - 14:11

Cure Kids is thrilled to announce that many of the world's most famous Kiwis have teamed up for Red Nose Day to Cure Kids.

The national appeal in August will include a New Zealand-first - a four and a half hour comic marathon on TV3 - Red Nose Day Comedy for Cure Kids - on 24th August. One hundred per cent of the donations will be invested into medical research into child health.

Approximately one child in 30 in New Zealand, roughly one in every classroom, lives with a life-threatening illness or genetic malformation. So it's fitting that this year's Red Nose Day to Cure Kids showcases kids in every community fundraising for their school, with an unforgettable trip to Europe up for grabs, courtesy of Red Nose Day partners Paper Plus and Take Note.

With only two months until Red Nose Day, schools are encouraged to start planning fundraisers now, so they can be part of the live broadcast.

Cure Kids is the official charity of the NZRU and All Blacks, and is proud to partner with TV3 for the comedy extravaganza Red Nose Day Comedy for Cure Kids. The line-up for the programme reads like a who's who of Kiwi comedy greats and will feature internationally-renowned Kiwi icons - global phenomenon Flight of the Conchords, Rhys Darby, Jeremy Corbett, Paul Ego and the 7 Days panel. It will also include a special cameo appearance from some of the All Blacks.
