FANS OF THE CONCHORDS

MESSAGE BOARD

Huffington Post - March 20, 2009

i suppose i wasn't as offended by her remarks about their humor and music. [image]
i think that they are some of the most talented comedians/musicians out there!!! the authors opinion really doesn't have any effect on the way i feel about them, and she is entitled to it. like someone said before me, she is obviously a fan of the show and probably thought she was giving
some
[image] constructive criticism [image]

as far as their sexuality on the show, i'm quite sure that it has not been ramped up for ratings (they have tons of fans!!!) or necessarily on purpose. it just happened to be where the story line went!

other than that, i loved the article!

I think a big part of their appeal to me (apart from the sixyness) is that they put themselves in the role of the innocent in this big sex farce that is the show. They are just as nuts and fearless as someone like Will Ferrell (who I love because he will do ANYTHING) but they talk charmingly rather than yell.

I completely agree.

Interesting how different the writer's impression is from many of ours, and yet she's also a fan of the show.

... After all, it is an unspoken secret among their fans that Flight of the Conchords are really not very good. Their humor is always gentle and inoffensive, but falls squarely in the tedious Eddie Izzard genre of hyper-quotable British-Commonwealth whimsy, whose appeal is perilously inextricable from its foreign accent. ...

It's a secret FotC fans share, huh? But we're just not saying it? Is that what's going on?

giggletycoon wrote:I remember reading somewhere (Twitter?) that Bret and Jemaine are the adult equivalent of Lisa Simpson's Non-Threatening Boys. I kind of agree. It's embarrassing to admit, but their sexual passivity is probably an unconsious reason that I find them sexy.

They have been playing up their sexuality this season, even if they would never admit it. From an interview with James Bobin on WTF:

Suzanne (a.k.a. SuzyBatt) asks - Taking into account that everything on the show is done in an extreme tongue-in-cheek fashion, how much of their increasing sex appeal among female fans informs the writing of the show? In season two I've noticed several more instances where Jemaine is practically objectified, the best one being in in New Cup. I wonder if this kind of scenario is purely poking fun at Jemaine's growing sex appeal, or if somewhere in the background the network is actually pushing for this to help increase viewership? Or it is just that Jemaine is really comfortable with his body, and just likes putting it out there!?!
That’s a long question! With a pretty short answer….certainly it wasn’t a conscious decision to increase the ‘sexual’ nature of the character of Jemaine. I think it’s just that some of the ideas we had for the second season were slightly darker than those of the first. Certainly doesn’t come from HBO who are incredibly hands off when it comes to the show and who only really pass comment at each stage of writing/shooting/editing with suggestions rather than directives.

They have so many adoring fans that they must know how sexy they are by now, but I'm not sure that Bret and Jemaine have put a lot of thought into why women find them so hot. The writer chalks it up to the feminization of their sexuality on the show, but I don't think that has had a bearing on the storylines because I'm not sure Bret and Jemaine are aware of it.

Thanks for bringing in that quote, Laura! [image]

And this isn't related, but it's re: them being "mediocre musicians at best"....unfortunately, I can sometimes be an outright snob when it comes to music, and the same can be said for my classically-trained peers. :-\ However, most of my friends that adore FOTC are these fellow musicians. We all have tremendous respect for Bret and Jemaine. No, they're not [image] virtuosos[image] ...they're so much more. [image]

Why would we be fans of something we thought was "not very good" anyway?

I also call bullshii on the accent=funny argument.

I think a big part of what she's missing is that the main reason we (I think I can speak for us here) find Bret and Jemaine so incredibly attractive is so much more than their looks and inadvertent sexiness....

They are hilarious and talented!!!!

And yet she writes a whole article seeking "Why?" they're sexy, but belittles their comedic and musical abilities.

FAIL. Somebody missed the boat!

agreed, but I liked the way she summed it all up as it being porn to women... I never really thought about it that way and now I do.

The writer is obviously a big fan of the show (she even knows that the characters' last names are Clemaine and McClegnie for chrissakes) why does she need to insult their comedy before making her argument? Also, "they've been shirtless too many times to count" - I wish.

I somehow missed that! Where do you learn that those are their last names?

And I disagreed with a lot of things in that article. They are funny and talented and that was what I noticed first.

And Eddie Izzard does flippin RULE!!!

Both names are mentioned in the show. If you want specifics (episode/scenes) - let me know, or you may want to have fun discovering them yourself.

The names have since been confirmed in various interviews...

Bret says his in "What Goes on Tour" when he's signing "autographs" for the NJUWWPT at the hotel bar (whoo! sorry felt obligated to say the cheer). Don't know when Jemaine says his.

Er...hope I didn't ruin the surprise.
