Taika the Actor

Taika Cohen and Taika Waititi, one and the same overachiever extraordinaire.

by gezyka » Sat Jun 12, 2010 11:37 pm

... From college, Waititi went to Victoria University, fell in with a good crowd, and from there his career in theatre took off. Before he got behind the camera, Waititi had quite a career going in front of it, with roles in Scarfies, Snakeskin, The Strip among other things.

His talent as an actor has provided him with a crucial source of income over the years. “I appreciate ads for that. I hate them with all my heart but if it means I don’t have to do more menial stuff to get by then I’ll do it. It’s better than washing dishes.” He’s now doing less and less acting work. “I’m moving away from it. Partly by choice and partly cos there’s a lack of challenging good roles out there. That’s a bummer, a lot of the roles [in New Zealand] don’t challenge actors. I moved into directing because I was sick of hanging out waiting to go on and taking orders and not doing my own creative stuff.” ...

5 Minute Call (2002)

gezyka wrote:Alright, so I found this clip while searching for Taika Cohen stuff on youtube.

5 Minute Call (part 4)

Check out those teeth...yet his hotness is unaffected. :P I did watch each part of the series because his name was tagged in all of it, but he was only in this one.

Basically, it's shot kind of like a documentary of a company preparing to put on a play called "Deep". Part 1 begins with the casting process, and it goes on from there. Kind of odd, but has some funny bits. Plus Loren's in all of them!

Amily wrote:Ahahahahahahah what is up with the teeth?!! Such a weird vid!

But yes, can totally see through to the hotness... as long as his mouth is closed it's all good. I really wish he would act more or that we could see more of his acting past. I wish he would do both, he is an amazing director and writer... I REALLY REALLY hope he works with the boys again on the new season.

Thanks for posting this Jess, definitely a treat. ;D

The Bacchanals (2000)

gezyka wrote:Taika as Othello:

Few of the young cast are actors whom you would necessarily think of in these roles. Taika Cohen, known more for his humorous qualities, isn't the most obvious Othello. It's hard to envisage him as a military general, yet, as jealousy invades Othello's sanity, he's frighteningly believable.

And hang on there:
Music by Jemaine Clement & Bret McKenzie :o

I should have fled to NZ upon graduating from high school. Image (this was in 2000)

Edit: Ok, upon further investigation, this seems to be common among the Bacchanal productions. This photo (which I've seen before) came from The Frogs:

Further searching provides this description:

A Perfect Love

Made as part of the 48hours Furious Filmmaking competition 2008 in New Zealand.

This years elements were...
Character: Kerry Post; A Perfectionist
Line of Dialogue: "Wait a minute"
Prop: A Brush Review from Steelpotato...

Kerry goes around Wellington nodding his head at things he finds perfect, like a fruit arrangement or makes perfect eg by tidying up, shaking his head at things that are not like rocks. Seeking a like mind, he sets up a facebook page, furiously typing what he is after, however he really wants someone exactly like himself, and from here the film gets its edge. In an outstanding basic choice of outfit that fits the character; a pink jersey and glasses, Taika gives a superb performance. A Film by Tyler & Dan (View Site) (View Site)

You're right...he does seem a bit narcissistic, so this role is strangely fitting. #haha# But if I were him, I think I'd fall in love with my own reflection, too. #loveeyes#

And yes, moony eyes!!! HOMAGOD. #drool# #thud# #ded#

I thought it was hilarious that when he was typing the blurb about himself, he said something like, "RAFLMAO!!! I like everything to be perfect!!" hahahahaha

OMG!!! #rofl#

I did a facebook search and capped it! I think he was the fourth hit. ;D

And he only has four friends. I'm tempted, but I'm sure that account has been long neglected!

Scarfies (1999) / AKA Crime 101 in the US

gezyka wrote:Found some Scarfies (1999) clips here: http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/scarfies-1999

Synopsis:

Five Dunedin students find themselves in a free squat, and a dark place, after taking a criminal captive in their basement. The debut feature from Dunedin talent Robert Sarkies starts as a comic tribute to Otago student days, then turns into a psychological thriller. Outside of the two Once Were Warriors movies, Scarfies was the most successful Kiwi release of the nineties on its home turf. It went on to scoop the best film, director and screenplay awards at the 2000 NZ Film and TV Awards.

Written by Robert and Duncan Sarkies! Taika plays Alex.

It looks INTENSE. :o

I had no idea Scarfies was such a success in New Zealand. It reminds me of Shallow Grave.

I hope Duncan Sarkies finds more work, he seems really talented. New Fans and New Cup are two of the best episodes of the show.

The Strip (2002)

gezyka wrote:So, yeah...

Once upon a time (2002), Taika was on a TV series called The Strip.

It was a show about a strip club, folks. (Click on the above link to read about the show, episodes, characters, etc.)

MOSTIN (Series 1)
Played by Taika Cohen

At first glance, even second, Mostin seems to be the least likely stripper in the world. To start with he's more 'skinny' or 'wiry' than 'muscled'. And he's so weird - a strange cross between a puppy and a Italian waiter on heat. Yet somewhere during the bizarre cabaret act which passes for Mostin's normal behaviour there are moments when he manages to be charming, charismatic, even enthralling. He's got 'Mostin factor' - an intangible, appeal that women go for. Because Mostin genuinely likes women. They sense that, and they feel he's an upbeat, gentle, albeit slightly off, disconcerting person to be around. Mostin's biggest test will be winning over Samara.

Turangawaewae / A Place to Stand (2003)

gezyka wrote:So I looked up another film that Taika is credited in, and found this:

Turangawaewae / A Place to Stand

(It's about 11 minutes long.)

Synopsis:

Actor Wi Kuki Kaa (1938 - 2006) plays Tiare, a Vietnam War veteran who is dislocated by his war experience and homeless. He wanders city streets collecting ephemera in plastic bags. Nancy Brunning plays his daughter, who, with her own daughter, visits their reluctant Koro (old man) to convince him to visit his ancestral home. A moving story about a man jolted to find his turangawaewae (place to stand), and the whanau that helps him get there. The film was directed by Peter Burger and selected for Critics' Week at Cannes (2003).

Snakeskin (2001)

emira wrote:Snakeskin trailer where Taika appears for a split second (0:58).

Synopsis:

For her first feature, writer/director Gillian Ashurst wanted a “big wide road movie; big skies; big long roads.” Cruising the Canterbury landscapes are small-town dreamers Alice (Heavenly Creature Melanie Lynskey) and Johnny (Dean O’Gorman). But the duo’s adventures go awry after encountering a charming American cowboy. Reviews were generally upbeat: praising the talented cast, plus Ashurst’s ability to mix moods and genres. Snakeskin won five awards at the 2001 NZ Film and TV Awards, including best film and cinematography.

Taika is credited as Nelson:

A home grown comedy about child neglect by New Zealand film director of the moment, Taika Waititi. It's just premiered at Sundance and won best feature at the Berlin Film Festival. But the audience Waititi most wants to impress doesn't live anywhere near a movie theatre.
