Tama Tū (2004)

gezyka wrote:So, Taika directed a a short film called Tama Tu (Sons of Tu), the "first New Zealand Arthouse World War II silent film comedy."

Description from the website:
Six Maori Battalion soldiers wait for night to fall in the ruins of a ruined Italian home. Forced into silence they keep themselves amused like any boys would, with jokes and laughter. As they try and ignore the reminders of war around them, a tohu (sign) brings them back to the world of thedying. They gather to say a karakia (prayer) to unite their spirits before they head back into the dark of war. Even at war…boys will be boys.

It also won several awards, including Honorable Mention in Short Film-Making at the 2005 Sundance Festival.

Here are some production stills that he's in:

Thanks for finding this trailer.

I don't suppose you know if the full film is available to watch anywhere? I know there is mention of it being released on DVD along with Two Cars... Did this happen?

gezyka wrote:Sarah, I looked, but all I could find said that it would be released in December/"later this year"...that said, I kind of think that was from a few years ago. If I find anything, I'll let you know! :)

This video isn't public. I don't know what I did that I found it on YouTube. I can't find the second part either, and I don't think this user has uploaded part 2. Anyway. You can watch the whole film on nzonscreen.com. :)

btw. I've found out that Tu is the name of the god of war in Maori mythology.

Someone has uploaded this film on YouTube grabbing it from NZ On Screen.

I suspect it's going to be taken down sooner or later. BUT Defender Films uploaded Tama Tu on their vimeo account. There's no permission for embeding, so here's the link to this short film.
