You're a legend Dave.

by squidhat » Fri May 21, 2010 3:11 pm

so i found this norwegian interview with Arj (also just realized he tweeted about it so you guys may have read it already heh), and because i'm so terribly bored and don't feel like studying for my exams even though i should, i decided to translate it for you guys haha

I kveld (20. mai) står kultfenomenent Flight of the Conchords på scenen i Grieghallen.

- Hvordan kom du i kontakt med Flight of the conchords-guttene?

and here's my far from perfect translation:

- She probably doesn't want to speak to me ever again

Arj Barker, or Davjeet «Dave» Mohumbhai as he's called on the HBO series Flight of the Conchords, has been to Bergen before. But there's probably only a single woman who remembers that, according to himself.

Haven't heard of Arj Barker, you say?
Then you haven't been following the comedy hour (?).

Tonight (May 20th) the cult phenomenon Flight of the Conchords take on the stage of Grieghallen. The comedy duo with two seasons on HBO behind them have been praised for their delightful, absurd musical humor. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are originally from New Zealand and go to New York to live off the artist dream. And that's where Arj Barker, or Arjan Singh which is his real name, shows up. The Indian-American stand-up comedian and actor has been in the game since 1997 when he made his TV debut on the American comedy show Premium Blend. But most Norwegians weren't aware of Arj before he showed up as Davjeet «Dave» Mohumbhai.

In the series Arj plays a friend of Bret and Jemaine. He works in his family's pawn shop, Mohumbhai & Son, and gives the two «musicians» advice on women and other tricks for surviving in the big city. Dave still lives with his parents in the series.

Byavisen asks Arjs what the audience can expect of him in Bergen
- It's stand-up. A man and a microphone and lots of jokes (and hope?). Do you get that in Norway? If not, I think you're going to like it, laughs Barker.

How did you get in touch with the Flight of the Conchords guys?
- I was just sitting there one day when Jemaine called me and asked; Would you like to be on our TV show? I agreed and that's what happened.
- Most Norwegians don't know about your solo material. Is that going to affect your show in Bergen?
- No, it's better that way. They're not going to recognize any of my material, even though I've actually performed in Bergen and Oslo previously, about ten years ago. I doubt that anyone will remember me, or wait.. maybe one person, but she probably doesn't want to speak to me ever again.

What are the best and worst things about being on tour with Flight of the conchords?
- The best thing is that many of the people in the audience recognize me from the show and when I enter the stage there's a warm and good atmosphere. The worst thing is probably that we head on to the next city right after the show's over. That means I can't go out and party with the locals as much as I used to.
After the concerts in Norway, Arj Barker will go on tour.
- I have a very hectic schedule and lots of shows this summer. After this tour I'll be performing in Ireland, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia, Scotland, the Netherlands and then back to the US. I'm also working on putting together a Scandinavian tour this fall so that I can return to some of the cities we've visited on the Flight of the conchords tour and do a full show there, he says.
Yes, and of course party with the locals.

glad you enjoyed it! i figured it was too good to be ruined by the google translator, although as i said, my version is far from perfect as well ;D had to translate it to swedish in my head before i wrote it down in english so there are probably some grammatical errors (and spelling mistakes..) but i think it's accurate enough [image] :)
