Flight Of The Conchords
HMV Hammersmith Apollo, W6

Truly special show from Flight of the Conchords
By Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard 17.05.10

Pop parodists Flight of the Conchords might be massive sitcom cults, but it has clearly not made their heads swell. For last night’s opening number, Too Many Dicks on the Dancefloor, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie still managed to fit their Kiwi bonces into modest cardboard boxes.

Slightly flashier boxes than they previously sported, perhaps, yet the juxtaposition of megafame and oddball props made last night’s sold-out show all the more hilarious.

Despite the size of the venue the twosome effortlessly retained the self-mocking charm that made them Edinburgh Fringe favourites nearly a decade ago. Perched on stools, they eased their way through their extensive set, peppering pin-sharp pastiches of rock, rap and much more with confessions about their raucous on-the-road lifestyle — which extends to scoffing complimentary muffins and nearly getting stuck in lifts.

But it is the aching accurate musical send-ups and ludicrous rhymes that make the Conchords truly special and this two-hour epic did not disappoint, Highlights included Clement’s soulful sob-story I’m Not Crying (“It’s just been raining on my face”) and a turbo-charged Ziggy tribute, Bowie’s In Space. Best was their sublimely suggestive Sugalumps — “Honeys try all kinds of tomfoolery to steal a feel of my family jewellery”. Precious.

Anna! [image] LOVED your review, so hilariously done. [image] ;D

cheapzoo wrote:At one point a guy from above shouted 'Bret, you made me gay!' and there was a bit of banter about it. Mainly Jemaine saying that it was quite a responsibility to have and maybe Bret should think about calling his parents to explain. Later on I think someone shouted a similar remark about Jemaine and he replied with "First it was Bret and now me... I'm the gaymaker" which got a huuuge laugh.

Oh god. [image] [image] I'm with Courtney in wishing I was there to hear Jemaine say "gaymaker" [image] [image] [image] [image]

[spoiler]Confession: Half way through Demon Woman I realised my eye level had dropped about two feet. That sparkly spandex sure is.........ahem [image] .... sparkly. [/spoiler]

I really don't blame you. ;)

And now to work. If my boss isn't wearing something either sparkly or made from spandex I'ma be mighty pissed. *begrudgingly goes back to reality*

So, did he let you down? [image]

We were in row F, smack bang in the middle and has a great time!

Highlight for me was Woo A Lady, which was superb! Can't wait for a better quality recording of that out there.

Heres a pic from the end.

Thanks for the pic! I love it. [image]

So glad you had a great time and had such great seats. :D

I will have to save your video for after I see the guys in California at the end of the month though. ;) Trying not to watch any spoilers but I'm looking forward to it. [image] Thanks for sharing with us. Anything else you'd like to post, please do. As you can probably tell, we can never get enough. :P

Definitely!

I'm now wondering if it was actually Bret who messed up in Carol Brown. I couldn't remember the line this morning but having just listened to it, I think it was one of Brets. Either way Bret realised and Jemaine didn't. He was hunched over that omnichord like it was the tastiest looking pie he'd ever seen. [image]

Awww great video! Thanks for uploading, it's reminded me of lots of lovely moments. :)

I'm glad you caught I'm Not Crying, I loved that last night. Especially the 'I'm thinking about someone you don't know... who is dying'. The way the everyone kind of started laughing before Bret got to 'who is dying'. It made it even funnier.

chrissycubana wrote:kinda depends upon whether your boss is an attractive kiwi, though, doesn't it?? ;D

Yeeeeaaaah. Which he's not, so obviously I'll be quitting tomorrow. ;)

He wore a tweed and some odd looking loafers. So YES, big time. ::)

That's a very good point... why on earth did I ever say I wanted to see my boss in spandex in the first place? Ew. Bret and Jemaine, inside my head, causing mischief!!
