... or Mutual Love With Jemaine and Bret

[image] [image] [image]

Bret and Jemaine are brilliant.

They work hard to make all of us smile.

And we appreciate them for that.

But disruptive audiences make their jobs even harder:

"Sometimes it feels as if we're doing the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Everybody sings along to every line. I try to never listen to them."

- Jemaine Clement, interview from "Playboy Magazine"

"The strange thing is, the audience sings along, and they sing the jokes. It's not particularly funny anymore. It's just like singing along."

- Bret McKenzie, interview from "Onion: A/V Club"

... And then there was Carol Brown. A lovely bossa nova ode to ex-girfriends in the vein of 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, the song requires Clement to play a complicated electronic instrument that looks a bit like a miniature boogie board covered in knobs. It's also got a drawn-out fermata**** near the end of each chorus, which is supposed to go: "Carol Brown just took the bus out of townnnnn ... but I'm hoping that you'll stick around."

Here's what happened Monday:

Bret and Jemaine: "Carol Brown just took the bus out of townnnnn ... "

That Guy: "Australia!"

Bret and Jemaine: (lose the beat and have to stop the song) ...

- excerpt from tampabay.com review of 4/6/09 Tampa, Florida performance

Just as they show respect for us, it's also important that we return that respect. If we all take the time to consider each others' feelings, everyone can have an awesome time.

1. Please don't ruin their punchlines. They're musicians, but they're also comedians. When you shout or sing the punchlines--particularly before they do--you can throw off their timing and spoil the fun for someone who doesn't know the songs by heart.

2. Please don't molest your favorite Conchord. They're incredibly sixy, but they have boundaries. Imagine how you or someone you care about might feel about being groped or ordered to strip. There are ways to express your affection while still showing respect.

3. Please don't disrupt their set list with requests for songs. We all hope they'll sing our favorites, but Jemaine and Bret are the ones who decide which songs they'll be performing ... not the audience. When there's an appropriate time to make a request, they'll let the audience know.

If we keep these things in mind, there can be less of this:

And more of this:

Thank you for taking the time to read this message,
and I hope everyone has fun seeing them on tour!

Very well said! Everyone going to their shows needs to take note of this

I think camera flashes also deserves a mention too. It must distract the boys especially if they are bombared with pictures all at once and honestly pictures taken without flashes and perhaps image stabilization if needed, come out even better!
