Conchord may soar from Figwit to Hobbit role
DAVE BURGESS

Bret McKenzie could be going from being a Figwit in the Lord of the Rings to a big-screen presence in The Hobbit.

The Dominion Post can reveal that Sir Peter Jackson is trying to tempt the Flight of the Conchords co-star to take a role in the 3-D Hobbit films now being shot in Wellington.

It would spell a remarkable turnaround for McKenzie, who had a three-second spot as a pouting elf in the first Rings film.

A fan saw him on screen as Frodo was frantically trying to deliver the ring to Mordor and thought. "Frodo is great ... who is that?" And from that, the acronym Figwit was born.

It spawned the tongue-in-cheek figwitlives.net website in honour of the spunky elf – McKenzie was listed as one of Who magazine's 100 sexiest people in 2008 – and an hour-long documentary called Frodo is Great ... Who is That?!!

The final Rings instalment The Return of the King also saw the return of McKenzie, as an elf escort to Liv Tyler. He got one line.

He and fellow Conchords star Jemaine Clement later recorded the parody song Frodo, Don't Wear the Ring, which featured on their hit TV series and included the lines, "Frodo, don't wear the ring/ The magical bling bling/ You'll never be the lord of the rings".

McKenzie was at Wednesday night's opening of Miramar's new Roxy theatre along with Jackson and Hobbit cast members Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen, James Nesbitt and Adam Brown.

Hobbit spokeswoman Melissa Booth did not reply to questions about McKenzie and his role in the film.

Who knows if its true... I personally would love it if Bret was in the movie. Cause I was exposed to Figwit years before FOTC. And my friends' heads blew up when I told them #quotes# who Bret was #quotes# a few years back. ;D

I'd make a Figwit shirt to the midnight showing for sure... or at least FOTC shirt if I'm too lazy.

The whole thing is just hilarious. #lol# I'd be surprised if it happened but also happy for Bret if he decided to do it.

Go, Peter! #cheer#

Noooooo! Not again! #cry#

Bret, I love you, but it would make me super happy if you would stay out of awesome fantasy movies. Or at least stop making silly faces. #lol# #pray#

*pushes up nerd glasses*

if he were to play an elf again, the only ones i remember from the Hobbit are from Mirkwood - same as Legolas.

there's also a gaggle of dwarves that need to be cast... and lots of goblins...

there's also Beorn, who is a huge Russian-type dude that turns into a bear (i really REALLY don't think Bret would be good for that role ;) ).

OR (!!!!) as an in joke for those of us who have listened to the BBC radio episodes, Bret could play Bard of Dale, who is an archer that... um... (don't want to give away important piece of plot) does something really spectacular with an arrow #thumbsup#

[/nerd]

The amount Google alerts I received about this yesterday is hilarious! #lol#

I really hope it's true... at least that Peter Jackson wants Bret in it. If it is a joke, well good one then? #lol# #shrug#

'Flight of the Conchords' star Bret McKenzie may join 'The Hobbit'
by Josh Rottenberg

When stories began cropping up on the web this morning claiming director Peter Jackson wanted Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie in The Hobbit, some undoubtedly looked at the calendar and assumed it was an April Fool’s joke. Well, it’s no joke — EW has confirmed that McKenzie may be joining The Hobbit in a small role. Hardcore Lord of the Rings fans may know that McKenzie made two blink-and-you-missed-them appearances as an elf extra in The Fellowship of the Ring (during the Council of Elrond) and The Return of the King (telling Liv Tyler, “Lady Arwen, we cannot delay!”). McKenzie’s character was never named but fans dubbed him Figwit, as in, “Frodo is great — who is that?” Internet sites sprang up devoted to Figwit, and McKenzie’s then-fiancee Hannah Clark made a short documentary in 2004 about the Figwit phenomenon. In Season 1 of Flight of the Conchords, McKenzie and co-star Jemaine Clements paid tribute to The Lord of the Rings with the song “Frodo, Don’t Wear the Ring.” The exact specifics of McKenzie’s role are not yet known, but given the unlikely Figwit following, it’s a safe bet Jackson is bringing the character back as a sort of inside joke for fans.

NO LONGER A RUMOUR! :o

‘Flight Of The Conchords’ Star Bret McKenzie Joins ‘The Hobbit’ As Lindir

It looks like Bret McKenzie is getting ready to head back to Middle Earth but not as Figwit, as his character was dubbed—after a fan said “Frodo is great ... who is that?”—following his fleeting appearance in “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” He later appeared again, ever so briefly, in “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” As was reported last week, McKenzie was being sought out to return to the franchise and it looks like everything is signed sealed and delivered, but he won’t be a Figwit this time around.

Say hello to your new Lindir, an elf of Rivendell and the latest character to join “The Hobbit.” He’s a very, very minor player in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, a minstrel or musician of sorts who encounters Bilbo Baggins in “The Fellowship of the Ring” who sings to him his song of Eärendil[/size, with Lindir unable to decipher which parts Bilbo or Aragon wrote (thank you internet).

But of course, Peter Jackson is expanding the realm of “The Hobbit” for his upcoming two-fer of films so it will remain to be seen how big (or not) McKenzie’s role is. But as the former star of “Flight Of The Conchords” playing a musician should be no sweat.

The year plus long shoot is currently underway with the first entry in “The Hobbit” expected to land in December 2012. And we’d wager there are more characters who will be announced along the way.
